The Department of Spanish & Latin American Studies offers classes in the Spanish language and Spanish and Spanish-American history, literature, film and civilization.

Our language program is rich with offerings, with courses designed for beginning to advanced speakers. Special emphasis is directed toward conversational skills, and our students make significant progress.

Our literature courses explore the important contributions of writers from Spain and the Americas. For the convenience of non-major students, some courses are conducted in English. The same may be said of our courses in civilization. Several focusing on the political history of Latin America are among the faculty's most popular offerings.

We nurture one of Dalhousie's liveliest learning places. We hold a reception in the fall to welcome back our returning students and organize a Latin American film festival in the spring. We also boast an active students society. Every January, the students put on La Velada, a fiesta legendary for its food, music and dancing. In 2009, the Dalhousie Student Union voted La Velada the best Society Event of the year.
