Dalhousie student Eve Court takes a side trip to Barcelona while studying at the Universidad de Salamanca. |
The Salamanca Programme is a special inter-disciplinary program designed to allow Dalhousie students to undertake both an intensive study of the Spanish language and classes in Spanish culture.
Students who've taken advantage of the program sing its praises.
"Dalhousie's Spanish and Latin American Studies Department provided me with an incredible opportunity -- studying in three different countries over the course of one undergraduate degree! My second year was spent at the University of Salamanca, where I took the skills I acquired at Dal and put them to work in Spain. It is remarkable how rapidly my Spanish improved in two short semesters. By the end of the year, I not only the possessed language skills to cope with any situation, I had also made lasting friendships with people from every corner of the globe. With 30,000 students in a city of just over 150,000, Salamanca's university is its city, and international students make up a significant portion of its population.
In the fall of my fourth year, I studied in Mexico on an academic exchange. I was writing my honours thesis about contemporary Mexico, and I wanted to build a better understanding of the country that was the focus of my research.
My experiences in the two counties were very different and I feel privileged to have lived and studied in both the Old and New Worlds of the Spanish Empire.
