"While taking Beginning Spanish at Dalhousie as a transfer credit, I never would've imagined all these fantastic experiences would be mine," says Nicole Power, pictured here at Chichen-Itza.

For Students Interested in Studying in Mexico

Interested in a Study Abroad programme in Mexico in the Fall? The Department of Spanish & Latin American Studies has an exchange programme at the Universidad de Campeche, on the Yucatan peninsula. It is "bueno, barato y bonito"....

For $US640 you can get 3 full transfer credits from Dalhousie. Accommodation is with
approved families ($US360 a month for a single room and 3 meals a day).

Classes are concentrated in 4 days, allowing 3-day weekends to visit superb
Mayan ruins nearby, Guatemala, Belize, and Chiapas and Oaxaca. (N.B. All
students need a minimum of B- in Spanish 2020. For students currently taking
1020, 2020 can be taken in the summer session).

Information on the next information session will be posted here as soon as it is available.  For further information, contact Dr. John Kirk at kirk@dal.ca

This program is designed for students with a minimum of two years of university-level Spanish. It takes place at the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, in the southwest of the Yucatán peninsula, in Campeche, Mexico. It's administered by the university's Centro de Español y Maya.

"This was an absolutely, amazing experience," writes Nicole Power, a Spanish major and co-president of the Spanish Society. "Living the culture daily, I became fluent in Spanish, while learning so many interesting things about Mexican and Mayan culture. Through travelling in and around Campeche, I met great people with similar interests, and I was able to grow so much as a person. The program exceeded my expectations and I wouldn't change that experience for anything in this world."

While in Mexico, students take three courses: Gramática Intensiva (one credit), Vocabulario Intensivo ( one credit) and Historia Mexicana ( one credit). Students will complete a Letter of Permission from Dalhousie, and register in Campeche for these three courses.  Courses will appear as transfer credits on the student's academic record and will be noted by Pass/Fail grade.  Three hours of class are given each day, with one hour dedicated to each of these areas. There are several side trips to places of historical and cultural significance.

The Universidad Autónoma de Campeche is located in Mexico's Yucatán peninsula.

For a fuller educational experience, it's recommended that students board with Mexican families. They're also encouraged to travel and see Mayan archaeological sites in the Yucatán region, including the famous Mayan pyramid, temples, observatory and ball court of Chichen-Itza.

Founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadores, the city of Campeche sits on top of a pre-existing Mayan city, of which little now remains. With its old colonial Spanish city walls and fortifications, the city of 230,000 people has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The cities of Halifax and Campeche twinned in the spring of 1998, and since then there have been several educational, political and commercial exchanges.
